If recycling is so important to our planet and our economy, how seriously are we taking it? What progress have we made since the first Earth Summit issued a call to action over twenty-five years ago? Surprisingly, not very much. In 2000, the United States recycled almost 26 percent of all its waste. In 2013, that figure had climbed only slightly, to 35 percent. In 2000, Canadians recycled 19 percent of their waste; by 2013 they were recycling just a bit more, 24 percent.

Compare those figures with 2013 recycling rates in Europe. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, six countries had rates in the forties, six had rates in the fifties, and Germany was at 65 percent. Why is Europe doing so much better than the United States and Canada?
